Caveman bones

July 12, 2012
What may be the oldest fragments of the modern human genome found yet have now been revealed — DNA from the 7,000-year-old bones of two cavemen unearthed in Spain, researchers say.

[,,,]
The skeletons of two young adult males were discovered by chance in 2006 by cave explorers in a cavern high in the Cantabrian mountain range, whose main entrance is found at 4,920 feet (1,500 meters) altitude. Winters there are notably cold, which helped preserve the DNA in the bones. These bones date back to the Mesolithic period, before agriculture spread to the Iberian Peninsula with Neolithic settlers from the Middle East. These cavemen were hunter-gatherers, judging by the ornament that one was found with of red-deer canines embroidered onto a cloth.

[,,,]
Analyses revealed that current populations of the Iberian Peninsula, which includes Spain, Portugal and Andorra, are not genetically linked with these ancient hunter-gatherers. Instead, these cavemen were closer genetically to the current populations of northern Europe.

[,,,]
The researchers now aim to complete the genomes of both cavemen. Such data could help "explore genes that have been modified with the arrival of the Neolithic in the European populations," Lalueza-Fox said.

Brittain's Atlantis

July 12, 2012
Britain's Atlantis' - a hidden underwater world swallowed by the North Sea - has been discovered by divers working with science teams from the University of St Andrews.

Doggerland, a huge area of dry land that stretched from Scotland to Denmark was slowly submerged by water between 18,000 BC and 5,500 BC.< Divers from oil companies have found remains of a 'drowned world' with a population of tens of thousands - which might once have been the 'real heartland' of Europe.

July 12, 2012
Today New York City is the Big Apple of the Northeast but new research reveals that 500 years ago, at a time when Europeans were just beginning to visit the New World, a settlement on the north shore of Lake Ontario, in Canada, was the biggest, most complex, cosmopolitan place in the region.

[,,,]
Now, a scholarly book detailing the discoveries is being prepared and a documentary about the site called "Curse of the Axe" aired this week on the History Channel in Canada.

Thursday, 23 September 2010 - What if...?

July 9, 2012
You impose limitations upon yourself and then make a vain struggle to transcend them ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi~

What if there were no limits to what you were capable of?

What if you could transcend all the laws of our physical world and know the truth?

What if you could live in other dimensions?

What if you could live outside of your physical body?

What if you could take time ‘being’ instead of ‘doing’?

Apologies – I’m not trying to come across as a New Age/Spiritual guru althou...

Saturday, 31 July 2010 - A five minute daily routine that could bring you incurable optimism

July 8, 2012
Bad things happen to all of us but we are advised that it is our choice of reaction that determines whether we get stressed, or depressed or pessimistic. We can choose to be happy is the message of many self help books.

On the surface this seems perfectly logical, easy to understand and simple. So why isn’t it always so easy to put into practise? Why can’t we always take things in our stride with a smile on our face and a skip in our step?

I try very hard to practise optimism and, a ...

Stonehenge a 'symbol of unification'

July 8, 2012
Centuries of speculation have attributed countless functions to the famous Wiltshire landmark, describing it variously as a prehistoric observatory, a place of healing and a temple for ritual sacrifice.

But a new study by researchers from five British universities suggests Stonehenge may in fact have been built as a sign of peace between people from the east and west of the country after a period of conflict.

Thursday, 24 June 2010 - The real challenge of living a spiritual life

July 7, 2012
There is a certain spiritual writer whom I used to admire. He had a down to earth approach on how to live a spiritual life. After selling many books and earning a lot of money he decided that he could no longer be spiritual in the rat race any more so moved to a remote part of the world to live off his profits. And I thought – what a cop out!

There is a long tradition of using isolation to improve our spiritual connection. Monks would live in caves and people seeking the truth would be...
